An iron clad rule in this series is that the Tarot is almost never wrong, and is the universal principal holding all things together, so what should one make of it when it predicts an apocalypse? Usually, people would just simply sit down in exasperation, and wait for the end to wash over them, but not our Magica Quartet. With events being set in motion by the annihilation of the Tarot 'Lovers', readers, and everyone alike, prepare for any potential oncoming tragedy. It's bound to happen.

Gen'ei wo Kakeru Taiyō - 5
With background knowledge pertaining to Seira's vendetta against the Daemonia being gradually revealed throughout the course of this episode, one comes to understand that despite her headstrong demeanor, she is very brittle in the face of emotional conflict. Again this week, I presumed 'Ah dear, Daemonia of the Week, this is going to be boring...'. Having predicted most of the events that would take place, I went in fully dismissive. What I got was wholly unexpected, amid the series finally picking up the pace, and far beyond the scope of any initial expectations I had. They really outdid themselves in this episode, the production studio really outdid themselves. The Scriptwriters? Well, not so much...

Gen'ei o Kakeru Taiyō - 5
Shirokane Ginka finally hits the spotlight, with this episode being almost solely dedicated to her, and her background story. Naturally, our Daemonia of the Week is none other than... Uncle Honda. Asides from sharing a name with a large, Japanese Car manufacturer, Honda had been a very successful businessman, who happened to know Ginka's father very well. In times of difficulty, and stress, Uncle Honda often came round to help them, even though he could've just simply not bothered. However, good times don't last forever, pushing him to the brink of suicide. Then salvation was offered in the form of darkness, and it was there that Honda predictably fell to temptation. Classic heel face turn, and a really sad end for such a kind man. Gen'ei really demonstrates a harsh reality, bringing a whole Astralux of pain down upon our magical girls.
Gen'ei o Kakeru Taiyō - 4
So (annoying space there), the focus shifted in this episode to another set of people. At first, I optimistically wondered 'Could this be the birth of another Mahou Shoujo?'. Reality struck me down. This was just the tragic birth of another Daemonia. As interesting as the conflict between the Elemental and Diabolus Tarots are, this is starting to become a weekly formulaic occurrence, and one has to question where the story will take off in a different direction. If anything, Gen'ei requires a change of scenery, some extended plot development which will allow for a climactic resolution. Otherwise, it'll just end up being a poor man's Madoka.

Gen'ei o Kakeru Taiyō - 3
That is indeed a harsh reality. You can try to save everyone, but that doesn't mean everyone will be saved at the end, even if you put your life on the life. Akari learned this the hard way, much like Madoka did. I think there are several issues with the pacing, and that AIC spent too long having Akari make her decision (exposing her raw naivete in a way), but whatever. At least it looks like we'll finally get some progress with the plot, and awaited action.

Gen'ei o Kakeru Taiyō - 2
Light vs Darkness has been the standard concept for all Magical Girl shows, but over time, it has become rather cheesy. Though new elements are combined, and recreated in Gen'ei, the varying degree of success each one brings leaves it hanging on the edge of a knife. Make or break, this can actually become a show to redefine the Magical Girl genre (like Madoka), or completely fall on it's face.

Gen'ei o Kakeru Taiyō - 1
MAMI REINCARNATE, indeed the first thought that crossed my mind upon seeing the main protagonist. Not a carbon replica, but I was firmly reminded of my beloved heroine, and nostalgia certainly bloomed in a dark corner of my heart. Another Magica Quartet strikes the scene, but Puella Magi Madoka Magica has already set the long-standing precedent for that role. Will Day Break Illusion be the first Mahou Shoujo anime that can come close to claiming a near equal footing with PMMM? Onto the review, and I'd just like to mention this is an anime I have high expectations for. Heck, after watching PMMM, I've never tried to see the Magical Girl genre in the same light ever again.
