So, the last anime to air that I'll be watching is here, and it's none other than the anime adaptation of 4chan's favourite manga
, Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui! (No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys' Fault I'm Not Popular!) or
WataMote for short. As a matter of fact, the manga was so popular on 4chan that it even marketed itself in japan as "the manga that's popular on the western version of 2chan" (2chan being the site that inspired 4chan). Anyway, lets put the pointless trivia aside for now, and onward with the review!

So WataMote is about a highschool girl (how could I see that one coming) named Tomoko Kuroki, who spends all her time playing dating sims or reading manga. In fact, she spends so little time actually talking to people, that she finds herself unable to talk to anyone outside of family. I think I now understand why this is so popular on 4chan. The series is about her silly attempts to make friends and seem cool and popular. While this is a fairly original story, the main problem it poses is that since it's so focused on one character, that ends up being the only interesting character. Then again, it could be argued that its a reflection of the life of an introvert, and besides, there are other characters, so we'll just have to see what happens as time goes on.

You can tell she needs to get out more... |
So this first episode wasn't bad. I checked out a bit of the manga afterwards and it follows it pretty accurately from what I saw. The humour seems to be mostly cringing at how socially inept Tomoko is which, as long as they keep finding creative ways to do it, I don't have a problem with. Tomoko is also somewhat adorable in her own way, and there is some entertainment to be had from seeing her in her happier moments. I look forward the rest of the season, however unless it does something more than what it shows in the first episode, I dont seeing being my AOTS (not that it ever had a chance considering Monogatari SS). And with this, I can also safely say that everything I'm watching this season has a great OP.
"I think I now understand why this is so popular on 4chan." - witty quote there
ReplyDeleteI think my favourite bit was when they parodied Death Note.
