Monogatari SS - 5 - End of Nekomonogatari Shiro

OH. MY. GOD. This was probably the best of anything else I've seen this season. I should say, before reading any further make sure you go watch this episode, because its worth seeing spoiler-free. With this episode we have the amazing conclusion to Nekomonogatari Shiro, and the return of our main character Koyomi Araragi. As well as that, we have the final main developments of Hanekawa's character and the truth behind Kako.

So, we have the epic confrontation between Black Hanekawa and Kako. It's explained that, as I thought, Kako is a being born of all of Hanekawa's repressed negative emotions. All the envy, anger, hate etc. towards herself, her family, friends and everyone else around her kept building up and being bottled up. The result was someone who was pure white, bland and boring. She didn't hate anything, dislike anything, and those feelings are what created the dangerous vibe that Mr. Episode got from her the last time they met. It's also the same thing he said had been "cut off" from her. Those feelings eventually reached a breaking point and created this fire-tiger apparition. Kako himself is an immensely powerful creature that exists only to burn t the ground everything around him, unleashing Hanekawa's repressed emotions in a similar way to Black Hanekawa releasing stress. However, there's only so much a cat can do against a tiger, so guess who comes to help out like he always does...

HE'S BACK. And more badass than ever before. With one quick strike from the Kokoro Watari, he downs the tiger. With this, Hanekawa can use the cat's abilities and essentially reabsorb all of the emotions that make up Kako. With this, Hanekawa comes to terms with the fact that she can't be the same person she used to be; she'll hate and be angry and jealous and all those other things. However, Hanekawa and Koyomi both accept this, knowing that it's what is best for Hanekawa. And with that, Hanekawa finally says what's been destroying her from the inside since the start of the series.

Even though she knows Koyomi already has someone else he loves, even though she knows he'll reject her, she still says it, because she needs that closure. With that, she can finally move on and become a new person. No, not a new person, she can become herself. She can stop with these white lies, she can stop being pure for everyone else's sake. She no longer has to avert her eyes and can instead face forward. For the first time, Hanekawa can be herself, and that is something beautiful.

And that's the end unfortunately. Although, with the return of Koyomi, I'm excited for the rest of the series to continue. I love how much of the finale you could predict by really reading into the dialogue and subtleties of the show up to this point. As far as conclusions go, I don't think I could have asked for anything better. everything ties up, and we get a good wholesome ending. Unfortunately the next episode is meant to be a recap of both Bakemonogatari and Nisemonogatari, and because of that I won't be covering it.
